TAARNA - HEAVY METAL

The 1980 Heavy Metal film is a cult classic.  It was only a matter of time before I pushed myself to do Taarna.  Heheh, I did her.  This figure is greatly inspired by Hawkmoon's figure where he used a BBI Nikki.  Hawkmoon's figure was jaw dropping.  It inspired me to work on Taarna.  I liked the Blaze sculpt the best out of all the CY girls, but she had reddish brown hair so how can I make her Taarna?  My rerooting skills sucked big time so I had to find someone to reroot for me, but who?

Jirevan.  I tried to woo J into doing reroots for me for the longest time, but due to her busy schedule, the reroot commission didn't happen for about six months when I approached her again.  For some reason, Jirevan's reroots are absolutely more stunning than most.  Like a Jim Maddox sculpt, all of Jirevan's reroots are a pure work of art.  After I received the reroot from J, I had the head for a good eight months before I finally completed Taarna.  The biggest reason was that I did not want to do a half-ass job and let J down for her awesome reroot.

Taarna is fully customized.  Except for her sword, which is a 5 inch letter opener I bought from the flea market, everything is made by me.  I spent quite a bit of time studying the Taarna pictures off the Web and rewatched the film several times to get her boots and accessories just right.  Taarna apparently has two layers on her boots.  The first is just a standard red boot, but the second is actually a boot cover with the knee pads attached to it.

The armor was something new I implemented.  Instead of sewing straight pleather, I added a small piece of clear plastic between the leather pieces.  Believe it or not, it's the plastic that comes from the boxes of figures you buy.  With a little heat, you can mold the plastic into any shape you want.  I accidently found this method when I was baking some clay.  I had some leftover pieces of plastic from my various boxed figures so I started using them as a sheet to bake my clay on.  The plastic became super soft within seconds and started to mold around the table.  It gave me tons of ideas.

Her knee pads and shoulder armor was done using this method.  I cut out a small piece of plastic, heat it, mold it into shape with my hands, let it cool and whoala!  I then sewed the armor pieces with pleather then inserted the plastic inside.  Doesn't look too bad huh?  This Taarna figure is dedicated to Hawkmoon and Jirevan for all their help.  If you guys are reading this, thank you.
