JOHN SHAFT - SHAFT (2000)

Hearing Samuel L. Jackson talk smack is one of the finer pleasures in life.  Everything from his deadpan "look me in the eye" sarcastic look to his "yellin?! I ain't yellin, that's the way I talk" way of saying things, you can't deny that he is "the man."  Sam Jackson is a badass.  There are very few actors which I own EVERY single DVD movie that they ever star in.  Even as much as I like Al Pacino or Robert DeNiro, I don't own every single one of their films.  I do with Samuel L. Jackson though.  I'm not sure why it is, but it seems I never get sick of the guy.

The original Shaft was a great film.  The 'pimpin porn' music and the overall era made the film a different experience altogether. There is no way in hell anyone could remake a film like that.  Had it been any other actor playing Shaft, the 2000 remake would probably have tanked pretty heavily.  Some friends of mine have argued that Christian Bale was the real star of the film.  A shoddy plot and too many things going on at once made Shaft 2000 a decent, but forgettable flick.  Only Bale and Jackson kept the film as a repeat viewer for me.  I couldn't care less about the story.  Okay, I think I'm officially out of things to say to fill up this page with text now, so let's talk about the figure.

The headsculpt is another Jim Maddox piece I got off of eBay.  Repainted him with acrylics as always.  The black/dark grey turtleneck is from a World War II Dragon figure.  The coat is from the Marvel Punisher figure, which I reworked a little by adding some larger gauge wires to make the coat hold poses better.  The "badge" around his neck is from one of the Hero Production Brad Pitt figures.  It says "DEA", but John Shaft was actually a New York cop in the film.  So shoot me if I'm not 100% accurate.

His leather pants is from the BBI Carlos figure.  I couldn't believe it, but I had like ten of these pants and jackets lying around.  Keep in mind that when you first get into the hobby, you try to buy up tons of multiples of things you figure you'll need sometime in the future.  Don't make that mistake because you'll end up like me - having a lot of everything with no place to store them.  So just buy exactly what you need and make whatever you can't find, or just sell off your extras.  It'll start adding up really quick.  His two glock pistols are standard DML guns that could be found anywhere.  Shaft is a figure I finished a long time ago.  It's one of those figures you can easily do and then forget because not much is really involved to make him, but you have to have him because you like the actor or the movie.  I love Samuel L. Jackson and I've done two or three different versions of him already.  You know what I mean - using the BBI bodybuilder and throwing Carlos' outfit on him.  Shaft was a fun and super easy project to do.  Just paint the head and you have pretty much all the gear in your loose parts bin.
