NEO

I am not about to spend $300 on Medicom's Matrix figures.  Sure I was pretty excited when I saw the Neo and Trinity figures being put out by Medicom, but once I heard that both the Reloaded figures had molded, non-removable, glasses, I immediately lost interest.  Medicom makes some pretty decent figures, but the thought of shelling out almost $200 each for figures that I will most likely modify anyways isn't a refreshing idea to me.  Neo is the easiest to make out of the three - Neo, MORPHEUS and TRINITY (check her out in the Killer Babes section).  Some basic sewing and hair sculpting is all it really takes.  The longest time I took with Neo was to repaint the head.  Otherwise, everything else didn't take quite as long as I had anticipated.

I have made Neo twice now.  The first using the cartoonish Hot Toys head.  The coat from CySeamstress was absolutely perfect for the slightly bigger Hot Toys body. After months and months of waiting for a Jim Maddox sculpt, I finally gave up hope and decided to mod the Dragon Josh head instead.

The Dragon Josh head is actually very well made and is almost a dead-on with Keanu Reeves.  However, he had "spikey hair" similar to the hair he had in "Speed."  I balded down the Josh head and resculpted the Neo hair with Sculpey clay, then repainted him over.  I seldomly sculpt hair because I prefer real hair any day, but Neo's slicked hair is almost impossible to reproduce with real hair, let alone, slick it down and retain its shape without some major work.

Because I decided to use the Dragon head and body, CySeamstress awesome coat would not work.  I had to find a way to make his coat on my own.  But what type of material to use and where do I begin?  Whatever I used must retain the drape well and it also must stretch slightly to accommodate the slimmer design I had in mind. I opted on using stretch velvet.  At $24+ a yard, stretch velvet does not come cheap.  I watched Matrix Reloaded over and over again.  My wife thought I was crazy.  I looked at all the various pictures Warner Bros. put up on their website and finally drew out his coat designs.  I think my sewing experience has moved up a notch.  Before, I would take weeks on end to sew an outfit.  The Neo coat took me only a few hours to sew from scratch.  His pants, socks, glasses and shoes are standard Dragon items.

Of course, after I completed the Matrix trio, Medicom releases the Neo and Trinity figures.  At almost $200, it's a decent figure for people who don't want to customize their own.  The Medicom headsculpts looks decent, but not that great.  I'll stick with my Neo and Trinity over the Medicom ones any day.

My Favorite Quotes from the movie:

"I know Kung Fu."

"Hmm. . . upgrades."

"The program "Smith" has grown beyond your control.
You can't stop him... but I can."
