It's kinda hard to believe that Robert Rodriguez filmed the cult classic, "El Mariachi" on a budget of only $7,000. His low-budget, over-the-top action has won many fans, but it has also opened the door to criticism by a lot of film makers. Nonetheless, I'm a big Robert Rodriguez fan and "Desperado" is my favorite film out of the Mariachi Trilogy. I initially wanted to make the Mariachi from Desperado, but after watching "Once Upon a Time in Mexico," I decided to make his outfit from Part III instead. His outfit from Part III was much more refined (not to mention hard as hell to pull off) and looked much better I think. The outfit from Desperado was more simple in concept. His inside white shirt was sewn with regular Jersey cotton. Finding the tiny buttons that wouldn't look oversized for his shirt wasn't too easy, but Michael's Arts and Crafts had these little packets called "mini buttons" that did the job.
His black outfit was sewn from a sueded stretch fabric. I was going to make it from expensive suede at first but the material was a little stiff to work with. I added the small chains and clasps from a small jewelry hobby shop I found close by. Now the scorpion and shoulder emblems was a different matter. I spent nearly six months on this figure mainly trying to get the scorpion emblem right. I initially tried to paint the scorpion on with fabric paint but I found out really quickly that the suede does not take any type of paint well. In fact, it didn't take paint period. I then tried printing it out with my PC with fabric patch paper and glued it on. It looked rather corny and I ended up throwing my first draft of the coat away. Besides, the first version of my coat was a little too long. I finally got the bright idea of
embroidering the emblems on after watching a Chinese TV series one night.
I knew it was going to take a long time, but four months, a few hours a day, is
just a little too much. I hand embroidered his scorpion emblem and the two
tribal designs on his shoulders. I first drew out the tribal designs on
paper and then embroidered it on day by day and then sewed the sleeves on
last.
Here's a big shout out to IPKevin for giving me a heads up on the Antonio Banderas look-a-like headsculpt. I initially wanted to commission Jim Maddox to sculpt Antonio Banderas' head, but he'd end up having solid resin hair. I've always pictured him with synthetic "real" hair that would drape well over his suit. During a chat session one night, IPKevin said, "you know, DML did a German guy with a pretty decent likeness to Banderas." The rest was history. I bought a nude figure from The Battle Rhino, sanded the hair down, repainted him and rooted the synthetic hair on. Not bad huh? His guitar case wasn't too hard to find. eBay had tons of them and I picked one up for about $20. The hard part was finding one that was right scaled. Most of the ones I've seen were either too small or two big. The one I picked up was just right. Heck, the guitar even works when you start plucking away at the strings. The inside of the guitar is lined with a maroon colored fabric and the outside is lined with black vinyl pleather. The locks work and keeps the guitar locked away nicely. He's pretty much done, but I might have to add his two shoulder holsters and a back holster for the shotgun.
