HUANG YAO SHI - THE ECCENTRIC EAST

Most Westerners will never comprehend the importance of Jin Yong's "Legend of the Condor Heroes" (She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan) Trilogy.  Written almost three decades ago, Jin Yong's most popular novel trilogy has become the base standard for many a great martial arts adaptations to comic, film, TV series, and even video games.  After watching the initial Hong Kong TVB series released in the '80s, I've been on a quest to live and learn Jin Yong.  I own every single version of his films released to date on DVD, including all of the TV series, any movie remakes, and even the ComicsOne adaptation of "The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre."

Part of the beauty that is Jin Yong's novels is the fact that they are beautifully written.  Every single character is unique in and of him/her self.  What's even more mesmerizing is the fact that every action or inaction of a character in Jin Yong's novel leads to an event later on.  If a villain is given mercy in one chapter and is afforded the opportunity of escaping, he'll come back 20 years later to wreak havoc on the next generation.  Stuff like that makes me weep with envy.  Oh, did I also mention that the TV series are also very well choreographed and filmed?  Some of Hong Kong's greatest actors/actresses came from the Condor Heroes Trilogy - Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Lau Ching Wan, Francis Ng, and Kenneth Tsang - just to name a few.

Ever since I saw the original Hong Kong TVB series when I was a kid, I've always wanted a set of figures of the Condor Heroes.  Yang Guo was my very first (and also my favorite Condor Hero) and he was very much a dive in experimentation.  It's been about two years since I made Yang Guo.  He's such a great figure that I can't see any improvement really, so instead of making a newer update of Yang Guo, I thought I'd try my hand at making some of the other Condor Heroes.

Huang Yao Shi, also known as the "Eccentric East," (or Evil East, Mysterious East, depending on your translation) is one of the four martial masters.  Jin Yong's universe dictates that in each region (North, South, East, West), there is a "Great" martial master that is the best out of that region.  The Greats started after the first martial tournament at Hua Shan Mountain where the four masters submerged.  Huang Yao Shi is the master of the Peach Blossom Island and the father of Huang Rong, the female lead of Condor Heroes Part I.

Huang's hair is perhaps the most difficult part to do since it had to be rooted and then tied.  Trying to tie doll hair is not exactly a job I'd want full time.  Instead of trying to glue rabbit fur for his moustache, I thought I'd try something new by rooting it in.  Doesn't look too bad huh?  His upper moustache is sculpted, but I rooted the lower part for the more natural look.

Hunting for the fabrics to make his clothing is also another not-so-fun event.  It's hard enough finding good fabric, but finding specific patterns, color, and texture for Huang Yao Shi's outfit was pretty tough.  I ended up getting them from about four different stores and through an order online.  Reverse engineering the outfits from the DML Hero figures, I came up with a pretty decent pattern for the Condoer Heroes era outfits.  Needless to say, I've got quite a few more figures from the series to make.

The Tai Chi sword Huang is holding is a private commission I put in with Weapon Lord "Auret7," another weapons customizer I highly admire.  Terry's weapons are made of real steel, wood, brass, metal, bone, and even leather.  This particular sword is very nice.  It has a wood handle, a metal guard and bottom piece.  The blade itself is real metal is sharpened rather well so you gotta be careful when handling it.

His boots are sewn with black stretch suede.  I thought I'd sculpt him his infamous jade flute too.  Huang Yao Shi is pretty much complete.  I just need to make him a red demon mask one of these days.  I'll try to take some more shots of the entire Condor Heroes crew together for a groupshot.  Or maybe if I have time I'll try to do a photostory with all of the characters together.  That'd be cool.
